Raksha Bandhan is an Indian festival celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan. It has its roots in mythology. According to one legend, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari's pallu and tied it around Lord Krishna's bleeding finger. Krishna promised to always protect her. 

In another legend, Indra's wife, Sachi, tied a Rakhi to protect her husband. Traditionally, a sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's wrist, wishing him a long life, and the brother gives a gift and promises to protect him. 

Today, the festival has expanded beyond blood relations to include friends, cousins, and even soldiers. Culturally, it symbolizes the affection, duty, and protection of siblings. 

There is no universally recognized festival, but some cultures have traditions of tying protective threads or amulets to symbolize sibling love. 

 Legends say Goddess Lakshmi tied a protective thread to King Bali on this full moon day, and Indrani tied a rakhi to Indra, setting a precedent for observing the bond of protection on Purnima.

रक्षाबंधन श्रावण पूर्णिमा को मनाया जाने वाला भारतीय त्योहार है। इसकी जड़ें पौराणिक कथाओं में हैं। एक कथा के अनुसार द्रौपदी ने भगवान कृष्ण की अंगुली से खून बहने पर अपनी साड़ी के पल्लू का टुकड़ा फाड़कर बाँध दिया था। कृष्ण ने वचन दिया कि वे सदैव उसकी रक्षा करेंगे। 

दूसरी कथा में इंद्र की पत्नी शची ने पति की सुरक्षा के लिए रक्षासूत्र बाँधा था। परंपरा में बहन भाई की कलाई पर राखी बाँधती है, उसकी लंबी आयु की कामना करती है और भाई उपहार देकर रक्षा का वचन देता है। 

आज के समय में यह त्योहार रक्त संबंधों से आगे बढ़कर मित्रों, चचेरे भाई-बहनों और यहाँ तक कि सैनिकों तक फैल गया है। सांस्कृतिक रूप से यह भाई-बहन के स्नेह, कर्तव्य और सुरक्षा का प्रतीक है। विश्व में इसके सामान कोई त्योहार नहीं है, परंतु कुछ संस्कृतियों में सुरक्षा के धागे या ताबीज़ बाँधने की परंपराएँ मिलती हैं जो भाई-बहन के प्रेम को दर्शाती हैं। 

 कहानियों के अनुसार, देवी लक्ष्मी ने इस पूर्णिमा के दिन राजा बलि को रक्षा सूत्र बांधा था, और इंद्राणी ने इंद्र को राखी बांधी थी, जिससे पूर्णिमा पर रक्षा बंधन मनाने की एक मिसाल कायम हुई।
